Rounding is a mathematical operation that gives an approximate number to the original one. Depending on the digit being rounded, the closeness of the result to the number varies.
The digit to the right of the place to be rounded determines the direction of rounding. If this digit is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), the number is rounded down; if it is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), the number is rounded up.
In rounding down, all digits to the right of the digit being rounded are set to zero.
In rounding up, additionally, the place value of the rounded digit is added to the number.
