## INFORMATION

### DECIMAL TO BASE 9 CONVERSION

#### WHOLE NUMBERS

We apply the following rules to convert a decimal number to base 9.

• We divide the decimal number by 9 repeatdly until the quotient becomes 0.
• Starting at the least significant digit, we write the remainders in the same order of divisions. For example, to convert decimal 83 to base 9, we divide 83 by 9 repeatedly until the quotient becomes 0.

When we divide 83 by 9, the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 2. Thus, 2 is the least significant digit of the base 9 equivalent. We continue the algorithm with 9. When we divide 9 by 9, the quotient is 1 and the remainder is 0. Then 0 is the second least significant digit of the base 9 number. Finally, we divide 1 by 9. When we do this operation, the quotient is 0 and the remainder is 1. Because the quotient is 0, we stop the procedure. Then we write the last remainder to the most significant digit of the base 9 number. To sum up, the base 9 representation of 83 is 102.

(83)10 = (102)9

#### DECIMAL NUMBERS

In case, the decimal number is not an integer, we can convert the whole number and fractional parts separately and add the base 9 equivalents up.

To convert the fractional part of a decimal number, we apply the following rules.

• We multiply the fractional part by 9 repeatedly until the product becomes an integer or the number of significant digits is sufficient for our calculations.
• At each step, we write the integer part of the rightmost digit to the fractional part of the base 9 number. We continue with the fractional part of the product.

For example, to convert 88.56 to base 9, we multiply the fractional part by 9 repeatedly until we find an integer.

• 0.56 × 9 = 5.04
• 0.04 × 9 = 0.36
• 0.36 × 9 = 3.24
• ............................ The fractional part of 88.56 is 0.56. When we multiply 0.56 by 9, the result is 5.04. The integer part of 5.04 is 5. Thus we write 5 to the first digit on the RHS of the radix point.

0.5

We continue with the fractional part of 5.04. When we multiply 0.04 by 9, the result is 0.36. We write the integer part of 0.36 to the next digit.

0.50

The fractional part of 0.36 is 0.36. Therefore, we continue with this number. The product of 0.36 and 9 is equal to 3.24. Because 3 is an integer we write it to the next digit.

(0.56)10 = (0.503...)9

Base 9 representation of 88.56 is equal to the sum of base 9 representations of 88 and 0.56. Thus, decimal 88.56 is equal to 102.503... in base 9.

(88.56)10 = (88)10 + (0.56)10

= (102)9 + (0.503...)9

= (102.503...)9
